TASK:
You will use the Microsoft Newsletter template of your choice to create a historical news article/news paper. The topic will be Child Labor in America during the Industrial Revolution (focusing on 1908-1938). You must be sure to answer the writing prompt and that you meet all of the criteria that is listed for this assignment.


PROMPT:
Imagine that you are a member of the National Child Labor Committee who has received photographs of child workers from Photographer Lewis Hine. Write a news article to accompany one photograph that urges the citizens of America to end child labor.

CRITERIA:
  • Must use approved Microsoft template
  • Must be dated between 1908 (Hine begins project) and 1938 (Passage of Fair Labor Standards Act)
  • Must include 1 Hine's photograph w/caption
  • Paper and Article must have titles
  • Must follow the prompt
  • Must be at least three paragraphs
  • Fonts: Times New Roman (use your judgment on the best size font)
  • Must provide facts about child labor (Ex: ages of children, wages, types of jobs, hours worked, etc.)
  • Sources cited

Note: Lewis Hine's photographs are public domain images which means that they are free to use without restrictions. However, we still need to give Mr. Hine credit for his work and the National Archives credit for giving us access to them.
On the National Archives website click on DETAILS. Locate and provide the VARIANT CONTROL NUMBER. Click on HIERARCHY and provide the ARC ID/Local ID Numbers in the gray box. (You may copy and paste these numbers and just adjust the fonts to fit)

      1. Go to the National Archives
      2. Choose DIGITAL COPIES.
      3. In the search box type Lewis Hine.
      4. Change 'limit search' to 1000.
      5. Press SEARCH.
      6. Take a few minutes to browse through the pictures to find the one you would like to use. It might be best to skip to a higher page to avoid using the same pictures as classmates.
